Jeff Sims was injured late in Nebraska’s Week 2 loss to Colorado. After his ankle injury, Sims was removed from action and Heinrich Haarberg finished the game.

During his Monday press conference, head coach Matt Rhule said the team practiced Sunday night but Sims was unable to go for that session. The quarterback’s availability for Week 3 is currently up in the air, and Sims will be evaluated throughout the week.

While Rhule did not provide a concrete outlook, he does not expect the injury to require a 4- or 5-week recovery. He also said Sims is still the team’s starter if he’s healthy but acknowledged the turnovers have to stop.

“Jeff’s our starting quarterback. If this hadn’t happened, he’d be out there,” said Rhule in reference to the ankle injury. “That being said, we can’t keep turning the ball over.”

In 2 starts for Nebraska, Sims has produced 6 total turnovers including 4 interceptions. That has zapped any positivity from the offense through the first two weeks.

We’ll see if Sims is indeed healthy — and still the starter — for Week 3, but Rhule also spoke positively of Heinrich Haarberg’s performance at Colorado. The head coach praised Haarberg for “bravery” in the pocket to deliver the ball while taking hits. Rhule also said there were some clear moments where Haarberg knew what to do with the ball.
