Matt Rhule is reportedly parting ways with one of his longtime assistant coaches. Per John Brice of FootballScoop, special teams coordinator Ed Foley and Nebraska have parted ways.

Foley had been in that position since 2023 but has followed Rhule to several stops. While Rhule was the head coach at Temple from 2013-16, Foley was his special teams coordinator and assistant HC. Foley then followed Rhule to Baylor, the Carolina Panthers, and Nebraska. In total, the coaches have been together for 8 of the last 10 seasons.

After a disastrous performance by the Nebraska special teams in the Pinstripe Bowl, however, Rhule declared that the unit needed a “complete and total overhaul.” These comments make the move less surprising, but the duo’s relationship still makes the move a little shocking.

In the Pinstripe Bowl, the Huskers had a punt blocked, an extra point blocked, and a failed fake field goal attempt. The team came in at No. 91 in opponent kickoff return yards, No. 114 in opponent punt return yards, No. 117 in extra point percentage, and No. 102 in field goal percentage.

Even with a miserable year for the special teams, the Huskers finished with a 7-6 record. The team was able to secure its first bowl win since 2015 by beating Boston College 20-15.

In an offseason in which Rhule has already had to replace his offensive and defensive coordinators, the coach will now need to find a new special teams coordinator for the first time in Lincoln.
