Mike Riley has been named to the College Football Playoff selection committee.

Riley, who served as Nebraska’s head coach from 2015-17, will join the 13-member committee for the 2024 college football season. He replaces Pat Chun, who stepped down from his role after taking over as Washington’s athletic director earlier this offseason.

“We are pleased to have Mike join the committee,” CFP executive director Bill Hancock said in a press release. “He has significant experience as a player and coach, and he loves college football. He will bring a unique perspective to the committee. Plus, he is a delightful human being.”

Riley has nearly 50 years of coaching experience, including as a head coach at Nebraska and Oregon State. Most recently, he was the head coach of the New Jersey Generals in the USFL from 2022-23. Riley had an overall record of 112-99 during his time as a head coach at Nebraska and Oregon State. He went 19-19 with the Cornhuskers over 3 seasons.

As a player, Riley was a defensive back at Alabama under legendary coach Bear Bryant from 1971-74. Alabama won the SEC in each of Riley’s 4 seasons with the Crimson Tide.

Other members of the 2024-25 CFP selection committee include former Missouri coach Gary Pinkel, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel and Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek. Members of the committee typically serve 3-year terms before being replaced.

In 2024, the College Football Playoff will expand for the first time to include 12 teams from across the country. Previously, the CFP consisted of just the top 4 programs each year. Further expansion to a 14-team playoff could happen as early as 2026.
