Bill Moos hasn’t enjoyed much of that rich Nebraska football tradition since taking over as the athletic director in Lincoln. In fact, he’s seen the Huskers record just one victory in his time.

Nebraska is off to an 0-6 start, the worst in program history. It allowed Northwestern to overcome a 10-point deficit in the final minutes last Saturday, letting another opportunity slip through its fingers.

There have been signs of growth and improvement, but not enough to put a tally in the win column. And Moos believes it’s going to continue to be rough until more talent arrives in Lincoln.

“Sometimes, in my opinion, we may be getting manhandled a little bit,” Moos told the Omaha World-Herald. He believes quality depth is a key issue for the program at the moment.

“We have a plan, and the plan is sold, it’s just that you can’t do it overnight,” Moos said. “It doesn’t take a season to go from first to worst and doesn’t take a season to go from worst to first. I’m not saying we were ever first or we were ever the worst, but we’ve got to go from the lower end to the higher end and that’s going to take more than a year.”

The issue with talent is something that head coach Scott Frost has harped on, as well. He’s mentioned that Nebraska doesn’t have the talent or the depth to compete with some of the top teams in the conference.

Penalties, turnovers and poor defense have also been issues this season.

Offensively, the Huskers have done some nice things. Adrian Martinez has been a spark at the quarterback position and JD Spielman is the fastest player in Nebraska history to reach 1,000 receiving yards. The pieces are in place, but it’s going to take some time.

Both Frost and Moos are on the same page.

Nebraska does have opportunities to post wins each of the next two weeks. The Huskers host Minnesota on Saturday and will take on Bethune-Cookman in two weeks. Those two matchups, along with a  game against Illinois later, are the most winnable games left on Nebraska’s schedule.

The Huskers are currently on a 10-game losing streak. They hope to snap that Saturday against the Gophers.
