Nebraska is reportedly adding a key figure to the offensive staff after things have regressed throughout the season.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Matt Rhule is adding former head coach Dana Holgorsen to the Husker coaching staff. Holgorsen’s role will be as an offensive consultant, per Thamel, but it is expected his role will evolve as the season goes throughout the season.

Holgorsen’s track record working with college quarterbacks is extensive, both as an assistant and as a head coach. Graham Harrell (Texas Tech), Case Keenum (Houston), Brandon Weeden (Oklahoma State), Geno Smith (WVU) and Will Grier (WVU) are all QBs to develop at least in part under Holgorsen.

Holgorsen was most recently at TCU. He has a 92-69 overall head coaching record with stops at West Virginia and Houston after serving as a longtime OC with stops at Oklahoma State, Houston and Texas Tech.

Nebraska’s offense has come back down to earth after a strong start to the season. Since a 28-10 win over Purdue, the Huskers have gone 1-3 overall while averaging 14.5 points per game.

A larger issue also involves freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola who has seemingly regressed as the season goes along. After a 4-1 start to the season with a 9-to-2 TD-to-interception ratio, Raiola has just 1 passing touchdown and 6 interceptions in the last 4 games.

We’ll see how the addition of Holgorsen helps Nebraska unlock the offense down the stretch.
