Nebraska has made no bones about it since Matt Rhule came to town: the Huskers want to use a fullback.

After the position was all but cast aside by the previous regime, Rhule and his coaching staff have needed to be aggressive in pursuing players for the position this offseason. On Saturday, they added a homegrown talent at the position. Former Notre Dame tight end Barret Liebentritt announced on social media he plans to transfer to Nebraska and move to fullback.

“I can’t wait to get to work,” said the former Omaha Skutt product in a note on social media.

He’ll have 2 seasons of eligibility for the Huskers.

Liebentritt, a 6-foot, 235-pound walk-on at Notre Dame, was listed as a tight end on the program’s official roster. He appeared in 13 games last fall, all on special teams. He entered the transfer portal just before the spring window closed.

At Skutt, Liebentritt played both sides of the ball — linebacker and fullback. As a senior, he paced the defense in tackles and ran for 604 yards and 8 touchdowns on offense.
