Awful.
That’s just one of the words you could use to describe Nebraska’s defensive performance on Saturday against Minnesota. There are plenty of others in the dictionary, but none of them are much better. The Huskers gave up over 400 rushing yards and a 54-21 loss to the Gophers in Minneapolis.
Defensive coordinator Bob Diaco had one other word to describe it: terrible.
Following the blowout loss, Diaco met with the media to talk about Nebraska’s performance against Minnesota. He said it was one of the most terrible moments in his entire coaching career.
“This was one of those terrible, terrible times,” Diaco said. “But this moment can’t define these young men. This moment can’t define these players. This moment can’t define this staff. It’s just a moment. It’s a big moment, there’s no minimizing it. Terrible.”
Diaco did attempt to soften the blow by saying it wasn’t a defining moment for any member of the Nebraska football program, but this was a significant defeat for Nebraska. Not only did the Huskers fall to 4-6, they were embarrassed by a mediocre Minnesota team.
This might be the moment that athletic director Bill Moos points to if he decides to start looking for a new coaching staff.
