Earning a Blackshirt is sacred in Lincoln. It’s one of the most prestigious honors for a Nebraska defensive players to receive, and it can be an emotional and humbling experience.

That’s especially true for freshman defensive end Garrett Nelson, who earned his Blackshirt this week.

Nelson, who was a member of Nebraska’s 2019 recruiting class and was the No. 3 prospect from the state, earned his Blackshirt this week as a true freshman. That’s quite the accomplishment in Lincoln.

After earning the Blackshirt, Nelson was understandably emotional. Below is his reaction:

That’s awesome stuff. And it’s the kind of culture and attitude Scott Frost is trying to bring to and stabilize within the program.

So far this season, Nelson has appeared in all nine games for the Huskers, totaling 10 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. This week, Nebraska will take on Wisconsin in an attempt to get to 5-5 on the season.
