It’s not often a player goes from a walk-on to a blackshirt at Nebraska, but Luke Reimer did just that.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Cornhuskers Twitter account for football released a video showing the process of him coming to the team as a walk-on and then earning the blackshirt.

As a blackshirt, you’re one of the leaders on Nebraska’s defense and it’s been a tradition going back to 1964 when Bob Devaney was the head coach.

In the video, Reimer touches on what it means to be a black shirt:

“I didn’t know much about the black shirts or what it meant or anything like that,” explained Reimer. “But as I moved up here for junior year, and I started to learn about that tradition, and what it meant to be a black shirt. Becoming a black shirt, nothing changes, it just elevates your leadership on and off the field. You take control of your room. You’re already doing what you should be doing and that’s why you get a black shirt.”

Reimer had the best season of his collegiate career in 2020 with 4o tackles (29 solo) with 2 sacks and 1 forced fumble.
