A Nebraska basketball commit has been named the winner of the Gatorade Player of the Year in his home state of South Carolina.

Bryce McGowens, a member of the Huskers’ 2021 class, received the honor on Friday morning. The honor recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character.

The 6-foot-6 McGowens averaged 21.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.1 blocks per game at Legacy Early College in his final season. He’s considered to be one of the best scorer of the 2021 recruiting class.

McGowens is a 5-star prospect, ranking No. 26 nationally according to 247Sports. The guard held offers from two dozen programs but chose Nebraska over other big-time teams such as Florida State, Clemson, Maryland, LSU, Oregon, South Carolina and Xavier, among others.

McGowens is part of a five-man recruiting class Nebraska is bringing in for the 2021-22 season. The Huskers rank No. 3 in the B1G and No. 17 nationally.
