Nebraska lands commitment from Georgia Southern LB Marques Watson-Trent, 2024 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year
Nebraska has been one of the most active B1G teams in the transfer portal this offseason. On Saturday, the team added another player, securing a commitment from former Georgia Southern linebacker Marques Watson-Trent.
Watson-Trent was named 2024 Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year after racking up 120 tackles, 1 pass deflection, 1.5 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles for the Eagles. Now, the standout defender will test his luck in the B1G with the Huskers.

Watson-Trent spent 4 seasons with the Eagles collecting 358 tackles, 6 pass deflections, 6 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, and 2 INTs. The linebacker is 2nd all-time in career tackles at Georgia Southern, trailing only Paul Carroll. Watson-Trent earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Notably, the defender played against Nebraska in 2022 when the Eagles upset the Huskers 45-42. In that game, Watson-Trent racked up 10 tackles.
Before college, Watson-Trent starred for Blackhawk High School in Beaver Falls, PA. The talented defender was a safety in high school but switched to LB in college. Watson-Trent chose Georgia Southern over offers from Akron, UMass, and Navy. The LB spent his first 2 collegiate seasons contributing on special teams before becoming a full-time starter in 2022.
Now, Watson-Trent becomes the 13th player to commit to the Huskers in the portal and the 7th defender. Former Missouri edge Williams Nwaneri and former Kentucky WR Dane Key highlight the incoming transfer class in Lincoln.
