Nebraska starting offensive tackle Nick Gates has decided to forgo his senior season in Lincoln and will enter the 2018 NFL Draft

Gates made a statement through his Twitter account on Tuesday morning, announcing his decision. He joins quarterback Tanner Lee as the second underclassman to leave the program early.

“It has taken me a long time to make this decision. I believe Coach Frost will take Husker Nation to where we need to go,” Gates wrote. “However, after talking it over with my family, friends and coaches, I have officially decided to declare for the 2018 NFL Draft.”

Gates started in 36 career games for the Huskers, starting every single game the last two seasons. He was an honorable mention All-B1G selection by the coaches and media following the 2017 season.

In 2016, Gates was a key component of a Nebraska offensive line that allowed the fewest sacks in the B1G. He also paved the way for a much improved rushing attack last year.
