Nebraska-Tennessee home-and-home for 2026-27 canceled; Huskers announce new games
Nebraska and Tennessee are no longer scheduled to play in 2026 and 2027.
The Huskers made the announcement on Friday. In a program release, Nebraska Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said the series is scrapped due to planned renovations at Memorial Stadium that will lead to reduced capacity. As such, the Huskers want as many home games on the schedule.
“We are making plans to embark on major renovations of Memorial Stadium that may impact our seating capacity for the 2027 season,” Dannen said. “The best scenario for us is to have eight home games in 2027 to offset any potential revenue loss from a reduced capacity. The additional home games will also have a tremendous economic benefit on the Lincoln community.”
With the Volunteers off the schedule, Nebraska has added home games against Bowling Green University on Sept. 12, 2026, and Miami (Ohio) University on Sept. 11, 2027. The program announced that Northern Iowa has also been added to the 2027 schedule for a Sept. 18 meeting.
Tennessee AD Danny White made clear it was not a mutual decision, and offered a “correction” to Pete Thamel’s reporting of the news.
Correction: Tennessee is not canceling this series. Nebraska did. We are very disappointed that they didn’t want to play these games, especially this close to 2026. https://t.co/uSz7kAXk94

Reportedly, Nebraska asked for the series to be rescheduled, and Tennessee declined.

There are renewed talks of SEC and Big Ten teams playing each other in the regular season if the College Football Playoff adopts a new model with 4 automatic bids for each conference. We’ll see if that leads to the Huskers and Volunteers meeting down the road.
