Nebraska volleyball is in the record-setting business this season, and the Huskers set another attendance record in their return to the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

On Wednesday, the Huskers matched up with in-state rival Creighton. For that match, Nebraska had 8,656 fans in attendance, a new record for the Devaney Center.

Of course, that’s a far cry from the 92,003 fans that packed Memorial Stadium for Volleyball Day in Nebraska, but the arena was maxed out for the match.

“All I noticed was the standing room only was packed, but I didn’t even think about the attendance record because I forgot they added the seats in there,” said head coach John Cook after the match. “It’s pretty cool but I think really what that is, that’s the respect for Nebraska and Creighton in this… if you want to call it a rivalry or whatever it is, there’s a lot of respect and there’s Nebraska kids on the court.

“I think our fans — it’s a continuation of last Wednesday, the celebration of volleyball in this state. And people wanted to be here on a Wednesday night, that’s pretty impressive. But yeah, that standing room only was packed.”

As for the match on the court, Nebraska secured a resounding 3-1 win over Creighton and used a blitz over the first 2 games to build a huge lead. The Huskers raced out with wins of 25-9 and 25-13 before dropping a nail-biter of a 3rd set.
