Nebraska defensive assistant coach Bill McGovern is heading back to the NFL.

Zack Rosenblatt of NJ Advance Media reported that McGovern has been hired by the Chicago Bears to be the team’s inside linebackers coach for the upcoming season. McGovern spent the 2020 season on the Huskers staff.

He leaves Nebraska after just one season.

McGovern arrived in Lincoln after spending the previous seven seasons in the NFL. He was the outside linebackers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2013-15 and then was the linebackers coach with the New York Giants from 2016-19.

The move to Nebraska was McGovern’s first stop at the college level since a lengthy 13-season stint at Boston College (2000-12) where he served as the linebackers coach and defensive coordinator.

Nebraska closed out the 2020 season with a 3-5 record and will be entering the fourth year of the Scott Frost era in 2021.
