Shawn Eichorst is out as Nebraska athletic director, according to multiple reports on Thursday afternoon.

According to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s website, a search is underway for a new director of athletics after ending the employment of Eichorst. Chancellor Ronnie Green made the announcement.

“Shawn has led Nebraska Athletics in many positive ways, but those efforts have not translated into on-field performance,” Green said. “Our fans and our student-athletes deserve leadership that drives the highest levels of competiveness, as well as excellence across all facets of Husker Athletics.”

Eichorst’s contract still has $1.7 million remaining on his contract, which runs through June 2019. He was relieved of his duties on Sept. 21.

Eichorst also issued a statement following the school’s decision.

“While I am deeply disappointed in the decision today, I am grateful for the wonderful years that my family and I have spent at Nebraska. I am proud of how our student-athletes, coaches and staff represented this great university and state, and I am confident that the future is bright for Nebraska Athletics.”

The decision to move on from Eichorst comes just days after the Huskers football program started the year 1-2, losing to Oregon and Northern Illinois in consecutive weeks.

Nebraska intends to appoint an interim athletic director until it finds a permanent replacement for the position. The search will begin immediately, according to the release.
