The play from Adrian Martinez has been overlooked because of Nebraska’s sluggish start to the season. But make no mistake, the freshman quarterback is a really special player.

If it wasn’t evident before, it certainly was clear on Saturday. Martinez completed 25-of-29 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns. He added 125 yards and a score on the ground. Nebraska came out with a 53-28 win over the Gophers.

For his efforts, the Huskers quarterback as named the B1G Freshman of the Week.

But it wasn’t just Saturday that Martinez has been impressive. He’s played this way for most of the season. Head coach Scott Frost finds the success of his freshman quarterback a little unbelievable.

“At this stage in [Martinez’s development], he’s right up there with the best ones I’ve ever coached,” Frost said during the B1G coaches teleconference.

Frost also said that Martinez has exceeded his expectations.

Martinez has played in six games this season, throwing for 1,443 yards and nine touchdowns with just three interceptions. He’s completing passes at a 66 percent clip and has added 415 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Four times this season, Martinez has been the leader of an offense that has produced 500 total yards.

The 1-6 start has certainly gotten in the way of Martinez’s success. But his performance in the Huskers’ win couldn’t go unnoticed.

People are going to start noticing Martinez a lot more in the future, especially when the Huskers start putting more tallies in the win column.
