The conclusion of Nebraska’s spring practice schedule is drawing closer to an end. On Saturday, the Cornhuskers will round out the spring season with the annual spring game at Memorial Stadium.

With practices winding down, head coach Scott Frost met with reporters on Monday to talk about a variety of topics.

When it comes to the quarterback battle, it’s widely thought that Texas transfer Casey Thompson is the starter heading into fall. Frost says, right now, no decision has been made.

“The timetable (to name a starter) is whenever it’s clear to us and to everybody,” Frost said. “I think there’s a lot of guys doing some good things but we’re nowhere near ready to make an announcement yet.”

Nebraska is looking to replace Adrian Martinez, a 4-year starter who departed after last season to finish his career at Kansas State. Logan Smothers and Heinrich Haarberg were the returning players, while the Huskers also brought in Thompson and former Florida State QB Chubba Purdy.

There’s still plenty of time between now and the start of the season, so there’s no rush to name a starter.

Frost was also asked about Saturday’s spring game format. While he’d like to have two teams competing in a more traditional game, injuries might force the staff to make some adjustments.

“We’re going to have a long discussion about that (Monday and Tuesday),” Frost said of spring game plans. “It’s looking like we’re going to do some sort of format with offense vs. defense. I don’t like that, I’d rather have two teams playing each other and trying to win a football game. We just have so many guys at certain positions that are nicked up that it’s going to make it hard to field two teams.”

Nebraska’s spring game is set for 2 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 9. The game will air on Big Ten Network.
