Tony White, Nebraska DC, talks initial reaction to Lincoln, respect for Blackshirt tradition
Tony White, the new Nebraska defensive coordinator, spoke about his introduction to Lincoln and his initial reaction to his new football home.
White is one of the latest hires to head coach Matt Rhule’s staff. Rhule was hired at the end of the 2022 season after former head coach Scott Frost was terminated.
The team was under the direction of interim head coach Mickey Joseph for most of the season. White landed in the defensive coordinator role after spending time at Syracuse in the same position.
While speaking to the press, White said “You see why it’s different” after his initial observations about the team and city. One thing White won’t be making changes to is the Blackshirt tradition at Nebraska. Top defensive players are honored by receiving custom Blackshirts at the end of pre-season practice, a tradition dating back to the 1960’s.
White has received advice on how to handle the Blackshirts and stated that he wants to do right by it.

Nebraska DC Tony White has received a lot of advice on how to handle the Blackshirts. His respect for the Huskers’ defensive tradition is obvious. He’ll continue to seek feedback.
“I want to do it right,” White says.
