What Scott Frost said after Nebraska's heartbreaking loss to Iowa in season finale
Nebraska suffered another heartbreaking loss on Friday.
The Huskers owned a 15-point lead in the second half and held a 21-9 advantage heading into the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to avoid a disappointing defeat.
A blocked punt, a safety, and four field goals proved to be the biggest difference in the game. Iowa was able to make enough plays in the fourth quarter to escape Lincoln with a 28-21 victory. It was the seventh straight win in the rivalry series.
Nebraska’s loss also marked the ninth single-digit loss for the Huskers in 2021, setting a record in college football. Eight of those defeats came in 1-possession games.
Scott Frost met with reporters after another devastating loss. Here’s what he had to say:
Scott Frost: “The blocked punt was the game.” He adds that the fumble at the start of the drive – Smothers recovered it – could have been a big game. #huskers

"It's kind of been death by papercuts," said Frost. He thought the last play of the third quarter, when Smothers had to eat a fumble on what would have been a big gainer was huge. The blocked punt came a few plays later. "A lot had to go wrong in a row."

The last throw is a play Frost said they've run about 3,000 times. Looked like Smothers thought his WR was going to keep running, but WR has an option to stop there. "Wrong throw at the wrong time," Frost said of Smothers, who he thought played well enough for NU to win too.

Which if you look at the record, is every loss this season. #Huskers pic.twitter.com/K96k34Mr3Q

Nebraska coach Scott Frost: “With what we’ve been through, it’s human nature to have it in the back of your head, ‘What’s going to go wrong?’”
Wins take care of that, Frost said.
