The three Detroit casinos generated their lowest December revenue since the pandemic, resulting in a lackluster finish to 2025.
Last month, the MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino at Greektown combined for $103.4 million in casino revenue. It was the lowest December since 2020 when pandemic limitations kept the casinos to just $22.1 million in revenue.
December, typically one of the stronger revenue months each year, finished eighth among the 12 months of 2025 when it comes to most revenue.
With December’s numbers in, the three casinos finished with $1.27 billion in 2025 revenue a notable dip from 2024.
Detroit Revenue Down Over $17 Million in 2025
Last month, Detroit casino revenue was 5.4% lower than it was in December 2024. It was the second biggest dip year-over-year for a month in 2025.
That left 2025’s overall revenue 1.3% lower than 2024, a difference of $17.1 million. Here’s a month-by-month look at the last two years for the three casinos.
| Month | 2024 Revenue | 2025 Revenue | Percentage Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | $93,904,688 | $102,299,593 | 8.9% |
| February | $104,759,798 | $98,013,728 | -6.4% |
| March | $122,262,266 | $116,784,353 | -4.5% |
| April | $107,872,951 | $109,447,648 | 1.5% |
| May | $111,341,364 | $112,730,957 | 1.2% |
| June | $104,554,380 | $100,379,545 | -4.0% |
| July | $106,303,231 | $105,975,725 | -0.3% |
| August | $110,793,319 | $105,676,108 | -4.6% |
| September | $101,229,067 | $98,181,263 | -3.0% |
| October | $103,673,981 | $105,931,003 | 2.2% |
| November | $106,441,300 | $106,503,676 | 0.06% |
| December | $109,319,460 | $103,400,764 | -5.4% |
| Totals | $1,282,455,806 | $1,265,324,361 | -1.3% |
Though 2025 finished below 2024 in revenue, it still surpassed both 2023’s and 2022’s revenue total, so it’s not a major setback.
While the Detroit casinos took a slight step back last year, the same won’t be said for their Michigan online casino partners. The 15 licensed platforms, including the three tied to the Detroit casinos of BetMGM, FanDuel, and Hollywood Casino have already surpassed their 2024 revenue.
Michigan’s iGaming operators will ultimately tally over $3 billion in revenue when December’s numbers are released next week.
MGM Grand Detroit Sees Revenue Increase
Of the three Detroit casinos, one did manage to outperform 2024. That was the MGM Grand Detroit.
| Detroit Casino | 2024 Revenue | 2025 Revenue | Percentage Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| MGM Grand Detroit | $603,718,175 | $605,330,302 | 0.3% |
| MotorCity Casino | $385,873,666 | $376,122,459 | -2.5% |
| Hollywood Casino at Greektown | $292,863,964 | $283,871,600 | -3.1% |
The percentage points increase marks the second consecutive year that the MGM Grand Detroit has surpassed $600 million in revenue.
The MGM-branded casino is also the one closes to its pre-pandemic level revenue totals. Here’s a comparison of how the casinos did in revenue this year compared to 2019, before the pandemic impacted the casino industry.
| Detroit Casino | 2019 Revenue | 2025 Revenue | Percentage Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| MGM Grand Detroit | $623,515,060 | $605,330,302 | -2.9% |
| MotorCity Casino | $493,566,673 | $376,122,459 | -23.8% |
| Hollywood Casino at Greektown | $337,192,961 | $283,871,600 | -15.8% |
It’s not likely these three are going to collectively get back to their pre-pandemic revenue totals, but it’s a positive sign for the MGM Grand Detroit to be closing in on that mark.
