Michigan State had an incredible run during the 2024-25 college basketball season, but it came to an end on Sunday, as the Spartans lost to Auburn, 70-64 in the Elite Eight.
The Spartans found themselves in a big hole early, as the Tigers took a 23-8 with just over 10 minutes left in the first half on a Johni Broome 3-pointer.
However, as the case has been all year, Michigan State battled back to cut the deficit to 33-24 at the half. The Spartans continued to battle in the second half, but they were never able to apply a ton of game pressure on Auburn. The closest they got the deficit to was a 6-point deficit with 11 seconds left, and that ended up being the final score.
Jaxon Kohler led the way for the Spartans, as he finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jaden Akins (15 points) had a huge second half, scoring 13 of his 15 points. Jase Richardson (11) was the only other Michigan State players to reach double-figures.
It was another impressive season for Michigan State, even though they started off unranked. The Spartans were outstanding in the non-conference, with their only 2 losses being to Kansas and Memphis.
Tom Izzo’s team went out and won the regular season B1G title for the first time since 2020, and the Elite Eight trip was the first for the Spartans since 2019. It was the 11th overall during the Izzo era in East Lansing.
