Tom Izzo, whether he thoroughly likes it or not, must use the transfer portal this offseason to rebuild portions of his Michigan State roster. On Friday, that involved the Spartans landing a veteran piece out of the Southern Conference.
That player is Trey Fort, a 6-foot-4 guard out of Samford. Fort started 33 games for Bucky McMillan this past season and was an All-Southern honoree after also spending time at Ole Miss and UT Martin in his career.
Fort was Samford’s leading scorer at 14.6 points per game this season and was a serious threat from 3-point range at 37.9%. He also averaged 4 rebounds and 1.4 assists this year and is a career 37.4% shooter from deep.

The fit for Fort was clear in East Lansing with Michigan State losing off-ball guards Jaden Akins and Jase Richardson to the NBA, as well as point guard Tre Holloman to a transfer to NC State. That trio of guards served as the top 3 scorers for Michigan State this season.
Fort’s 3-point shooting is also a huge area of need for the Spartans. In spite of their bounce-back season, Izzo’s group was dreadful at just 31% from long range, a mark that put MSU 324th nationally.
Fort joins former FAU star Kaleb Glenn as players to commit via transfer to the Spartans this offseason. Glenn, a 6-foot-6 scorer, averaged 12.6 points for the Owls this season and shot 41% from 3-point range, giving Michigan State some scoring replacements with a focus on the longball.
We’ll see how the rest of the roster shapes up after an Elite Eight appearance and the best finish for the program since 2020.
