As of mid-day Wednesday, 10 players from the 2021 Illinois recruiting class had signed to play in Champaign next season, according to the Chicago Tribune.

But in an announcement on twitter Wednesday afternoon, Chevalier Benson announced his withdrawal from his commitment to Illinois, based on the recent coaching change.

The Illini fired 5-year coach Lovie Smith on Sunday morning, and Benson joins Florida safety Joriell Washington, in publicly decommitted after Smith’s firing.

The action is picking up due to the beginning of the early signing period on Wednesday, but it remains to be seen if some others decommit as well.

Smith’s firing potentially leaves the Illini’s 2021 class in a bit of limbo, as others may wait until the February signing day to see who is hired as the new coach.
