On Wednesday, the Maxwell Football club announced the 14 semi-finalists for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award.

Three B1G stars were included in the list of nominees for the outstanding freshman player in college football award. Illinois’ Gabe Jacas, Maryland’s Jaishawn Barham and Penn State’s Abdul Carter represented the B1G.

It’s certainly possible to see why these 3 players ended up on the list. Jacas is tied for the most sacks in the country by a freshman with 4, and is the first freshman at Illinois since 2017 with more than 2 sacks.

Barham leads the Terrapins with 3 sacks, and is second at Maryland with 35 total tackles. The freshman has also registered 4.5 tackles-for-loss this season. He is second on Maryland in total tackles with 35 and TFL with 4.5 while leading the Terrapins with 3 sacks.

Penn State has gotten a boost with Abdul Carter, who has registered 23 solo tackles, and 2.5 sacks in his Lions debut season. Carter ranks 3rd on the team in total tackles at 35.

Finalists for the award will be named on Dec. 6, and the winner will be announced on Dec. 29.
