5 B1G head coaches listed on Bobby Dodd Award Watch List, one glaring omission

Given annually to the FBS head coach whose team excels on the field, in the classroom and in the community, the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award released their midseason watch list featuring 22 candidates on Thursday.

Of the 22 nationwide candidates, five reside in the B1G. Paul Chryst’s Wisconsin Badgers are the highest-rated of the bunch at No. 6 in the AP Poll, followed by James Franklin’s Penn State Nittany Lions at No. 7.
All ranked between No. 16-23, Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh, Minnesota’s P.J. Fleck and Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz were the other three B1G coaches to make the cut.
Noticeably missing, however, is Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. Per Bobby Dodd Award policy, first-year head coaches are not considered. Seems safe to say Day will have at least of few of these nominations when his time comes.
Led by Alabama’s Nick Saban, the SEC also had five coaches make the list.
Named after the former Georgia Tech head coach, the Bobby Dodd Award was first presented in 1976 to Georgia’s Vince Dooley.
Michigan’s Bo Schembechler was the first B1G coach to win the award, doing so in 1977. A candidate again this year, Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly is the most recent recipient.
