Report: A return this season doubtful for Indiana QB Michael Penix Jr. after suffering leg injury

Michael Penix Jr. is out for the remainder of the season and with him might well go Indiana’s hopes for making the College Football Playoff.

Injured in the third quarter of Saturday’s win at Maryland, Penix has been one of the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten this year. And though he has struggled the past two games, he still has been tremendous for the Hoosiers and a major reason why they are 5-1 and ranked No. 10 in the latest AP Top 25 Poll.

In last week’s initial College Football Playoff ranking, Indiana came in at No. 12 according to the selection committee.

In reporting on Penix’s status, Bruce Feldman only called it a “lower leg injury.” Penix is a redshirt sophomore and this is his second season starting in Bloomington.

In spelling Penix, Utah transfer Jack Tuttle came in and was 5-of-5 for 31 yards in seeing out the win. Last season as a freshman, he was 6-of-11 for 34 yards in addition to nine rushes for 20 yards in limited action. Tuttle has never made a collegiate start but it looks like it will happen this Saturday at No. 18 Wisconsin.

He was a four-star recruit out of Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, CA. Ranked the No. 168 player in the nation according to 247Sports.com, the 2018 enrollee at Utah remains one of the highest ranking recruits to ever commit to the program.

This season, Penix had 1,645 passing yards with 14 touchdowns and four interceptions.
