Michigan State has been continually bitten by the injury bug this season. This week, the Spartans have sustained an0ther significant loss.
There was speculation that starting punter Tyler Hunt suffered a non-contact injury prior to MSU’s game against Purdue on Saturday. After the win over the Boilermakers, Mark Dantonio confirmed that Hunt sustained an ACL injury and will miss the remainder of the 2018 season.
He’s the second Michigan State punter to miss the 2018 season.
In the second week of the season, punter Jake Hartbarger suffered an injury when an Arizona State defender collided with his leg. He was expected to miss 6-8 weeks initially but was later ruled out the remainder of the season.
“I don’t think I’ve ever lost one punter, been on a team that’s lost one punter,” Dantonio told MLive.com. “Let alone two.”
The Spartans have turned to redshirt freshman Bryce Baringer for all punting duties for the remainder of the season. On Saturday, he punted four times with a 38.5 yard average.
Michigan State has also listed backup quarterback Rocky Lombardi as a potential punting option, but the team has needed him to fill in under center due to a shoulder injury to Brian Lewerke.
