ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips weighs in on ‘gated communities’ landscape of college football

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips is kicking off media days for the conference on Wednesday. During his initial remarks, he fired a shot at the shifting landscape of college football.
Indirectly, Phillips was seemingly critical of the SEC and B1G and their recent expansions into 16-team leagues. According to Phillips, he wants college football to be a “healthy neighborhood” as opposed to a few “gated communities.”
Phillips: “I will continue to advocate for college athletics to be a healthy neighborhood, not 2-3 gated communities.”
His speech has been all about the SEC and B1G without mentioning those names.

While Phillips might have a point, there’s no denying things are changing in college athletics across the country. Those changes are likely to be finished any time soon.
In terms of expanding the College Football Playoff, Phillips reaffirmed that the ACC is in favor of expanding the field and believes expansion is only a matter of time. Phillips also shed some light on why the conference voted against the opportunity to expand last season.
Jim Phillips says the ACC “continues to be supportive” of CFP expansion. It voted against the expansion last year, he says, because issues – such as the new FBS calendar – need to be addressed.
