Penn State has benched quarterback Sean Clifford following multiple turnovers in the first half of a rough start against Nebraska.
Rough, might be an understatement.
Clifford completed 5-of-8 passes for 37 yards but an interception and a fumble was enough to see James Franklin bench his starter. With 11:29 left in the second quarter, Clifford was sacked by Nebraska’s Denotai Williams who picked up the fumble and ran 26 yards for a touchdown.
The play gave Nebraska a 24-3 lead. The Cornhuskers, fresh off a loss a week ago at Northwestern, came flying out the gates against Penn State, looking faster and more physical then the week before.
Will Levis came into the game for Penn State and while the offense sputtered a bit, the redshirt sophomore quarterback led the Nittany Lions on a 13-play, 52-yard drive that set-up a 40-yard field goal by Jake Pinegar to make it a 24-6 lead for Nebraska. Levis completed one of his two passes for 10 yards on the drive.
The offensive ENERGY is different for #PSU right now…all of a sudden I see OL maintaining blocks 4/5 yards down field…was NOT the case in the 1st qtr. #PSUvsNEB

Last week, Clifford struggled in a bad home loss to Maryland. He was 27-of-57 for 340 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He was sacked seven times in Penn State’s third loss in as many games this season.
