Aidan O’Connell had a near-storybook career during his time at Purdue. Now, he’s playing for the Las Vegas Raiders in the NFL, and O’Connell is expected to get a major update for the rest of the season.

According to NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, the Raiders are expected to start O’Connell this weekend against the New York Giants and moving forward this season. The Raiders also parted ways with head coach Josh McDaniels and GM David Ziegler this week.

The Raiders started the season with Jimmy Garoppolo under center, but he has been banged up and inconsistent. O’Connell previously started a game against the Los Angeles Chargers and played well at times but ultimately ended in a 24-17 loss.

Against the Chicago Bears, veteran Brian Hoyer received the start in place of Garoppolo but struggled with 2 interceptions. O’Connell went 10-for-13 for 75 yards with a touchdown and an interception in that game, but it was another loss for the Raiders.

Most recently, Garoppolo started and played the entire game vs. the Detroit Lions but completed just 10-of-21 passes for 126 yards with an interception. With the Raiders moving on from McDaniels, it appears the organization wants to see what it has in O’Connell this year before making any major moves for the 2024 season.
