Hoggard and Tyson Walker anchored Michigan State’s backcourt the past 2 seasons, but Hoggard was unable to elevate his game after the 2022-23 season. As Walker elevated his game to over 18 points per game this season, Hoggard took a slight step back in terms of his scoring and assist numbers.
Impact for Michigan State
Even as Hoggard becomes one of the top veterans available in the transfer portal (he’s averaged 8.6 points and 4.6 assists in 131 career games), it’s possible Tom Izzo can better utilize that roster spot for the 2024-25 season. Hoggard’s potential had peaked in East Lansing, so a change of scenery could benefit the individual player and the MSU program.
Moving forward, the Spartans will have a distinctly new look next season with Walker and Malik Hall moving on and Hoggard in the transfer portal. Michigan State has already added Nebraska Omaha scorer Frankie Fidler to improve play on the wing.
In order to get back to impressive regular season results, Izzo and his staff landed Fidler and appear to be in the market for at least one other piece in the portal before the season rolls around.
