Auburn coach Bryan Harsin has tested positive for COVID-19, he announced on Friday afternoon.
He says he’s currently isolating at home and is not experiencing symptoms.
Here’s his statement:
“Yesterday I tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. I am isolating at home while experiencing no symptoms. As we have navigated through the pandemic, contingency plans have been in place should a situation like this arise. We prepared for this. Coach Jeff Schmedding will assume in-person head coaching duties and I will continue to participate remotely in meetings and practice. Just like in a game, teams that handle adversity and make necessary adjustments are those that are most successful. I have full confidence in our coaching staff and team. I know they will continue to prepare with the same intensity and focus that they have since camp started.”
It’s currently unclear whether or not Harsin is vaccinated.
Auburn’s matchup with Penn State isn’t until Sept. 18, so Harsin’s status for that game will likely not be impacted. However, it’s unclear how much of Auburn’s fall camp he will have to miss.
Auburn will be led by coach Jeff Schmedding while Harsin is isolating. Schmedding is Auburn’s assistant head coach and linebackers coach and worked under Harsin at Boise State.
Penn State hosts Auburn on Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
