Athlon Sports has released its annual edition of anonymous B1G coaches talking about other conference teams, and there are certainly some interesting takeaways.
Under the protection of anonymity, B1G coaches feel more comfortable giving their opinion on teams in the conference — whether it’s high praise or a brutal honesty. Not many believe the Buckeyes are going to take a step back just because Urban Meyer departed.
Ohio State has been the dominant power every year for the last seven seasons, and there seems to be a consensus the program will continue to be a power in the conference, even with the coaching change.
“They’re not going to miss a beat after Urban, that’s why they hired the guy already in the program,” one anonymous coach said.
Another coach reiterated the same point.
“No one expects this team to take a step back because Urban Meyer left,” said another anonymous B1G coach. “They showed how good they can be without him. Expect that level of execution from the three-game suspension period. They weren’t a different team in terms of what they called — they called the exact same stuff later on — but they had energy. Ryan (Day) was already evolving the play calling before he got the head job.”
Sounds like even other B1G coaches agree that Ohio State made the right move by hiring Day.
The Buckeyes are expected to be contenders again in the B1G East. They’ll be pursuing their third-straight B1G title this season.
