Several fans across the B1G — particularly those pulling for Nebraska and Northwestern — aren’t too thrilled with how Purdue earned a spot into the conference baseball tournament.
On Saturday, the final game of the regular season between Purdue and Maryland was canceled because of weather. Thanks to the no decision, the Boilers could not be caught by the Huskers or Wildcats in the conference win percentage category.
According to reports, Purdue and Maryland delayed the start of the game despite no rain in the area. First pitch was scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Rain didn’t hit the area until approximately 3:30 p.m. ET.
A Purdue loss on Saturday would’ve opened the door for both Nebraska and Northwestern to steal the last spot. A win for the Boilers — or in this case, a no decision — “secured” a spot in Omaha.
Here are some of the reactions from Saturday’s news:
You have zero integrity as a program

People saying Nebraska should have just won more games. Well if Purdue would have played today (instead of copping out) and lost and Nebraska wins today they would have won more games 🤷🏻♂️ just sayin.

Nebraska: sits through a 5 hr rain delay to play 1 inning instead of tying to move to 8th seed. Purdue: sits through 5 hrs of sunshine to not play and gets the 8 seed. #boilerdown

Yet Purdue has to show up in Nebraska and act like they belong there. (Not saying NU does but at least they played their games.) Good luck not getting booed out of Omaha.

How do you just decide not to play and it’s not a forfeit?

Purdue has canceled their way into the Big Ten Tournament.
They played three less games than everyone else vying for a spot. https://t.co/Dkm4cIRyNN

Black eye for @B1Gbaseball today. @PurdueSports rewarded for avoiding a game and failing to makeup two others. Conference baseball remains a joke in this league. https://t.co/bj86Lvx81k

Could of just called it this morning since they were never going to play instead of having a tarp show. https://t.co/XH2NGNlL33

I understand Nebraska had a down year after being picked to win the conference.
That being said the fact that no one from the Big Ten has stepped in to make this game happen with so much on the line is mind boggling to me.#Huskers even if they finish with a win today are out. https://t.co/hcC62rz3Vi

Cannot wait to see how the Big Ten responds to this https://t.co/cINmox5YOb
