Joshua E. Perry recently visited Michigan State and observed the Spartans go through fall camp while on a preseason tour with the Big Ten Network.

Perry said he came away impressed with how the Spartans look in Year 2 under coach Mel Tucker.

Here’s his three takeaways from his visit to East Lansing:

  1. Really Good WR Group
  2. Defensive Emphasis
  3. Tucker’s Impact

Perry didn’t mention any receivers by name, but said he was impressed by both freshmen and incoming transfers in that group, as well as the veterans.

“You look at some of the established talent on the roster, I think they’re fine,” Perry said. “But they brought in some young guys and some transfers that I think can really make an impact. Especially with the quarterback situation that’s still up in the air, it’s great to have those guys around.”

Perry said Michigan State’s defense looked like a unit that’s ready to create havoc this season.

“It’s a defense that’s going to need to come up with some of those splash plays that change the game,” Perry said. “And I think they way that they’re being coached and practicing right now is putting them into position.”

Perry also commended Tucker for his leadership on the practice field.

Michigan State opens its season with Northwestern on Sept. 3.
