Coming into the NFL as an offensive tackle, Chargers rookie Rashawn Slater will have his hands full with many of the league’s top defensive ends.

Thankfully for Slater, the former Northwestern standout, one of those defensive players will not be fellow B1G alum Joey Bosa. The two are both among Los Angeles’ young stars. During this year’s training camp, the two have gone up against each other in an attempt to prepare Slater for what’s to come this season.

Based on early results, the former Wildcat and 13th overall pick in this year’s draft is holding his own against the former Buckeye.

Slater has been asked about his matchups with Bosa.

“I know if I can build my technique and beat him, I can go against anybody,” Slater said.

Slater, a Sugar Land, Texas, native is no stranger to stepping in right away in the trenches. As a true freshman at Northwestern, Slater started 12 games and was named to the conference’s All-Freshman Team.

Over the next two seasons, Slater would be a consistent force up front for the Wildcats. That included his junior season when he did not allow a sack in 11 games with Northwestern.

With the uncertainty of the 2020 season, Slater elected to sit out his final season with the Wildcats and prepare for the draft. That work seems to be paying off as he was a first-round pick and looks to be a guy the Chargers will rely on from the get-go.
