Michigan is officially in the market for a new defensive coordinator.

Thursday night, the Baltimore Ravens announced the hiring of Mike Macdonald as the team’s new defensive coordinator. He returns to John Harbaugh’s staff after a 1-year stop at Michigan.

Macdonald worked with the Ravens from 2014-20 before taking the job as defensive coordinator on Jim Harbaugh’s staff. He began as an intern in Baltimore and climbed his way up to working with defensive backs (2017) and linebackers (2018-20).

Following the 2020 season, Jim Harbaugh fired previous defensive coordinator Don Brown because of the team’s struggles on that side of the football. The addition of Macdonald helped lead the Wolverines to a 12-2 record, a win over Ohio State, a B1G title and College Football Playoff appearance.

Macdonald also worked with and developed stars like Aidan Hutchinson, David Ojabo, Daxton Hill, Josh Ross and several others. He proved capable of running a defense at a high level.

It will be interesting to see how his success in Ann Arbor will translate to Baltimore.

For Jim Harbaugh, he’s now searching for a new defensive coordinator as National Signing Day approaches and with spring football on the horizon. It will be Michigan’s third defensive coordinator in as many seasons.
