Barry Alvarez set to receive ‘Living Legend’ award in Chicago before Wisconsin-Notre Dame showdown

Former Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez will receive the Knute Rockne Living Legend Award in a ceremony in Chicago next month.
The event will take place on Sept. 24, which is just one day before the Badgers are scheduled to play Notre Dame at Soldier Field in the Windy City. The Chicago Sports Museum will host the ceremony.
Alvarez won this award in 2020, but a ceremony didn’t take place due to COVID-19.
The Knute Rockne Memorial Society primarily honors Notre Dame graduates, so this is a unique position for Alvarez to be in. Alvarez played linebacker for Nebraska from 1965-67.
However, he does have a connection to the Fighting Irish. Alvarez was an assistant coach for Notre Dame from 1987-89 before leaving South Bend to take the head coaching job in Madison.
According to a write-up by the Knute Rockne Memorial Society, Alvarez took the Wisconsin job with the blessing of then-Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz.
Alvarez retired from his position as Wisconsin’s athletic director earlier this year. He was replaced by Chris McIntosh.
Wisconsin and Notre Dame kick off at 12 p.m. ET on Sept. 25.
