Everyone loves a good nickname. Some are a lot better than others, though.

Michigan State safety Angelo Grose might have the best in college football. It comes courtesy of his head coach, Mel Tucker.

During B1G Media Days in July, Tucker revealed the nickname he gave to the defensive back. You might remember that former Tyrann Mathieu went by “Honey Badger.” Grose is referred to as “Sugar Weasel” around East Lansing.

“I guess he sees a little honey badger in me,” Grose told Kyle Austin of MLive.com.

Tucker raved about Grose’s high football IQ and his ability to learn on the fly. That was demonstrated early in his career, as Grose played in all seven games for the Spartans in 2020, making four starts.

Grose, or “Sugar Weasel,” was credited with 23 tackles, 2 pass break-ups and a forced fumble as a freshman last season. But as Michigan State looks to improve on a 2-5 record, the sophomore safety will be relied on heavily in the secondary as a leader.

So, if you’re looking for the best nickname in college football, look no further than East Lansing. Grose is easily the winner of that title this year.
