Big Ten Network analyst Joshua Perry gives his takeaways from stop at Northwestern

The Big Ten Network crew recently stopped in Evanston, Illinois to check out Northwestern’s fall camp. BTN analyst Joshua Perry shared some of his top takeaways of what he saw from the Wildcats.

Junior Ryan Hilinski and sophomore Brandon Sullivan are battling for the starting quarterback job. From what Perry observed, it’s far from being settled. Either QB should be supported by a strong ground attack.

“The quarterback competition at this point is very much a competition,” Perry said. “Hilinski and Sullivan both had some good plays during practice, but they also both made mistakes. This is one that I think is going to play out a little bit more.

“When you look at that run game, they are going to be pretty good. The offensive line looks really good, obviously led by (Peter) Skoronski. And then to the running back room, you’ve got Evan Hull, you’ve got Sam Porter, both of those guys had some extremely explosive plays today.”

On the other side of the ball, there are question marks. Perry did like some things he saw from the Wildcat defense.

“Although I do think that they have some depth at d-line, they’ve got a couple of guys in the secondary that can make plays – the jury is still out on this defense,” Perry said. “They’re going to need all training camp to get up to speed. But the mentality of those players, they want to be better and I think that’s going to take them a long way.”
