Big Ten football teams will apparently have a little more firepower in their arsenals this fall when they travel for conference games.
According to a report on Friday afternoon by ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel, the Big Ten voted earlier this week to expand its football travel rosters from 74 to 80. This vote is for conference games, so that means Big Ten games will feature 6 more players for each team this fall for those key league showdowns.
Thamel’s report clarified why the vote was happening in the first place.
“The reason is the aged-based eligibility rules, as there’s no longer redshirts so there’s more players who will have the opportunity to play,” wrote Thamel on Friday in his social media post explaining the vote.
With this Big Ten vote, this means there will be 12 players combined for both conference teams who can impact a game, giving Big Ten coaches just a little more opportunity for versatility as their available rosters will be a little more deep.
For Big Ten showdowns, those extra 6 players each can be the difference between winning and losing, so this was a pretty big vote just a month before the start of the 2026 season.
