Billy Packer, legendary college basketball broadcaster, passes at 82

The college basketball community is mourning the loss of a legend. Billy Packer has passed away at the age of 82, his son Mark announced on social media.
Packer spent over 30 years calling college basketball games, getting his start in 1972. From 1974-2008, he was the lead college basketball analyst for NBC Sports (1974-81) and then CBS Sports (1981-2008).

On social media, the college hoops community remembered the late, great Packer for helping grow the sport.

Very sorry to hear about Billy Packer. Knew he’d been sick, but still sad news. We used to constantly, but I think he was best college hoops TV analyst ever. Told you what he thought, was usually right and never cared if people didn’t like his analysis. Always enjoyed his company

Billy Packer was a giant as a college basketball analyst. Basketball star, successful businessman and a great family man, Billy was a part of every Final Four telecast from 1975 to ’08. He was a big part of the meteoric rise of March Madness. He was a good friend. RIP.

Packer attended Wake Forest from 1958-62, leading the Demon Deacons basketball team to the Final Four in his last year.
