Bob Wager, Nebraska’s new tight ends coach, met with the media on Thursday, and outlined his expectations of the players and recruiting in his new role.
Wager said he’s had opportunities in the past to coach college, but the timing wasn’t right. This time worked out because his son is a high school senior, Matt Rhule is head coach and it’s Nebraska.
Wager came to Nebraska after a successful high school head coaching career in Texas, where he coached for more than 20 seasons. Wager was asked if Nebraska can reestablish a recruiting pipeline to the state of Texas: “We’re banking on it.”
Wager said part of what drew him to Nebraska was Rhule’s approach about developing players as humans, rather than athletes.
“If all we teach is blocking and tackling, I think we’ve sold them short. Our meetings will always start with human development,” Wager said.
About the offense, Wager said the staff is just getting going with Xs and Os, but he wants to use multiple tight ends and be physical. He added that re-establishing the line of scrimmage is also part of the plan. He added that before he took the job at Nebraska, he reached out to Rhule about Ismael Smith Flores, and in Flores and WR commit Jeremiah Charles, Wager sees “great attitudes, and willingness to do whatever they can to improve the program.”
