Brent Venables gave his thoughts on watching Nebraska football throughout his childhood and realizing that he was not good enough to play for Nebraska.
Venables’ Oklahoma team will be playing against Nebraska on Saturday. He will be facing a Nebraska team that is in a much different place than the program he watched growing up. Nebraska recently fired head coach Scott Frost and will look to find a permanent replacement.
At one point in time, Venables thought about playing for Nebraska but he had a taste of reality. He knew his chances of making the team were not good (Via On3):
“Obviously I wasn’t good enough,” Venables said.
In college, Venables played at Kansas State for 2 seasons as a linebacker. He never felt he was good enough to be a star player:
“I grew up in the 90s, now. Late 80s, 90s, I just never thought of myself like I was good enough like that. And I was right. I found my spot. I wasn’t good enough at K-State, either, but somehow I found a hole in the fence. No, I’ve just always looked at Nebraska like I’m David,” Venables said, reaching his left arm out above his head, “and that’s Goliath. Had that type of mindset. It’s a whole ‘nother planet where these guys are from. And they were. And so, that’s how I just looked up to them like that. But everybody has their spot. Had a good perspective of where I was as a player.”
Venables is in his first season as Oklahoma’s head coach. He previously was a defensive coordinator at Oklahoma from 1999 to 2011 and Clemson from 2012 to 2021.
Oklahoma will travel to Lincoln to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.
