The debate between the current College Football Playoff and expanding to an eight-team format rages on.
Earlier this week, Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic reported that some of the more powerful voices in college football were lobbying to expand the current four-team format to an eight-team system. Major players like Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez and Big XII commissioner Bob Bowlsby were among the voices saying expansion was necessary.
But doubling the field may be easier said than done, at least according to Stadium’s Brett McMurphy.
The college football insider said there were still a lot of factors involved in expanding to an eight-team field. Primarily, McMurphy said, university presidents would have to be willing to start the season earlier or end it later in order to effectively incorporate an eight-team field.
Several university presidents have been against lengthening the season.
While there are a few voices already pushing to expand the field after just five seasons, it seems that a change would take some time and wouldn’t come as quickly as you might expect.
But this is the most an eight-team playoff has been discussed. There could be some serious meat to the argument for the first time in five years.
