Brian Ferentz did not sound happy after watching the tape of Iowa’s game against South Dakota State. The Hawkeyes put up just 7 points and 166 total yards in the putrid victory.
During Ferentz’s press conference, he indicated the tape review showed an adequate job by the offensive line in pass protection. That performance should have provided the quarterback with “ample opportunity” to make the right reads.
Iowa OC Brian Ferentz today on Week 1 quarterback performance: “After watching the tape … we had ample opportunity in the pocket to deliver the ball and do what we needed to do as far as making the read and getting the ball out to the correct guy on time.”

Quarterback Spencer Petras completed just 11 of his 25 pass attempts for 109 yards and 1 interception. Outside of Arland Bruce IV, no other Hawkeye had more than 2 catches. Bruce and running back Leshon Williams combined for 91 of Iowa’s 109 total passing yards.
The offensive showing left many Iowa fans scratching their heads. Not to mention, it was an embarrassing showing to the nation against albeit strong FCS team. South Dakota State came into the season ranked No. 3 in AFCA FCS Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.
Iowa will need to get things going offensively in a hurry against Iowa State. While the Cyclones also played a lesser FCS opponent in Southeast Missouri State, they at least scored 42 points.
The rivalry could get ugly if Petras fails to string together some scoring drives.
