Brian Ferentz draws unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after controversial review for Iowa

Brian Ferentz was livid after one controversial play went against Iowa in the third quarter of the B1G Championship vs. Michigan.

The Hawkeye offense under Ferentz was already struggling mightily to get anything going against Michigan, but that took another ugly turn with Deacon Hill getting hit as he tried to let go of the ball deep in his own territory.

On the play, Hill’s arm was hit as he began his throwing motion, and the ball squirted up in the air. The ball came down in a mass of bodies before falling to the turf, and officials initially ruled that play incomplete.

However, the play would go to review, and that’s when things took an interesting turn. Officials ruled upon review that the play was a fumble, and they awarded the ball to the Wolverines even though Josh Wallace did not recover the ball until after officials were in the motion of blowing the play dead.

After hearing the decision, Ferentz went absolutely ballistic on Iowa’s sideline. He received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty as a result and had to be restrained by players and coaches on the sidelines.

The overturn was a massive one with Michigan scoring on the ensuing play. Instead of fighting to get back into the game down 10-0, it was 17-0 Wolverines as a result of the overturned call.
