Brian Ferentz received a new contract amendment for the 2023 season, and many fans were immediately critical. After all, Ferentz was responsible for a 2022 Iowa offense that was historically bad in almost every category.
However, that new contract stipulates that Ferentz’s offense must average 25 points per game and win 7 games (counting a potential bowl game). Through 6 games, the Hawkeyes have scored 131 points, which is just under 22 points per game.
For anyone who struggled with math, to stay on pace to reach his goal, Ferentz needed Iowa to be at 150 points through 6 games.
Good news: Iowa wins, and they’re 5-1!
Bad news: the beat Purdue 20-14, which keeps Brian Ferentz behind his current goal of 150 points. pic.twitter.com/rqaoVPfc5F

The Hawkeyes’ offense struggled mightily in Week 6. Without Cade McNamara, who is out for the rest of the season, the team collected just 110 passing yards. Only 6 passes were completed, and none of those were to a wide receiver.
Thankfully, the Iowa defense didn’t allow Purdue to do much on offense, either. Also, the Hawkeyes were able to rack up 181 yards on the ground, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Kaleb Johnson being back will undoubtedly help keep the Hawkeyes’ offense afloat. However, the team will have to find a way to move the ball through the air. Ferentz’s job will depend on it.
