Speedy Ohio State cornerback Kendall Sheffield is the sixth Buckeye off the board, getting selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft.
With the 111th pick, Sheffield was taken by the Atlanta Falcons. He’s the third Ohio State defender to be selected in the draft, joining defensive lineman Nick Bosa and Dre’Mont Jones.
Sheffield didn’t get the opportunity to show off his skills at the NFL Combine in late February/early March, suffering from a pectoral injury during the bench press. That likely hurt his draft stock, especially as he didn’t participate in the 40-yard dash. He was discussed as being one of the fastest players in the draft.
But NFL teams are still aware of his speed and explosiveness, but he’s a work-in-progress. According to scouts, he still has trouble locating the football after it leaves the quarterback’s hands and is fairly inconsistent in the secondary.
In two seasons with the Buckeyes, Sheffield tallied 75 tackles, broke up 17 passes and intercepted two passes, both coming in 2018.
Now, he’s headed to Atlanta to try and bolster the Falcons’ secondary.
